XML Library

Thursday, May 25th, 2006

Carlos Santander has taken an existing XML library, modified it to use Mango rather than Phobos, and released it. You can get the zip file here (direct download). I can’t find a link to the original, so you’ll have to ask Carlos about that if you want it.

Commercial Game in D

Monday, May 22nd, 2006

Some time ago, Kai Backman, the developer of the game ShortHike, visited the D NG. He said that he was porting ShortHike, a C++ game, to D. Recently, he made good on that and released a development release of ShortHike that is the first 100% D version. You can read more about the release in the ShortHike forums. I’ll be keeping an eye on this and let you know when the final release version is out there.

New Tool From Walter

Monday, May 22nd, 2006

Walter has released a new tool, htod, which converts C headers to D modules. This will come in handy for a lot of people, methinks. Now, if someone would release a tool that converts C headers to Derelict-style, I’d be stoked. Yeah, I know. I have two hands, a keyboard, and a D compiler.

Growing Pains

Sunday, May 21st, 2006

I started a guild once in an MMOG I played regularly. I wanted to gather together some like minded people that I could depend on to be there and help each other out. It worked out quite well. We became a tight knit group and gradually added new members to the fold when we found them agreeable. Two years later, we had become so large that playing the game became like work for me. I was constantly arbitrating disputes, soothing hurt feelings, chastising trouble makers, and doing my best to keep things interesting, motivate my ‘officers’ to take some of the work load, make new members feel welcome, and generally do everything but enjoy myself. When I took a break from the game, the different cliques that had formed behind the scenes (as happens when you have so many people in one group) eventually caused the guild to fracture. Things were never the same again. (more…)

German D Forum

Friday, May 19th, 2006

If you count German among your non-programming languages, there are some German D forums at d-language.com. Forum topics include Tutorials, DFL, Harmonia, and more. I’m more fluent in Python than German, so I doubt I’ll spend much time there. But if any of you find the site to be a good resource, let me know and I’ll link to it in the side bar.
