Blog Upgrade

May 22nd, 2007 | by Aldacron |

I’ve just finished upgrading to the latest version of Wordpress. I had to do a full wipe this time, rather than simply overwriting existing files, so the potential for errors exists. If you see any, just let me know.

Also, I have a Q&A ready to post, but I’m running into an obscure Wordpress bug that I sometimes encounter. This is what prompted me to upgrade. Some posts cause a 404 error when trying to publish them. It happens only very rarely and I’m usually able to cut things out until the problem goes away. This time, though, is one of those where nothing is helping. The upgrade didn’t do anything for it.

I’m going to keep working at it until I can get the damn thing to go through. Maybe this time I’ll be able to figure out what’s triggering it so that I can submit a bug report to the Wordpress guys.

UPDATE: Interestingly enough, it seems to be the word ‘Python’ that causes things to barf when making a new post. I could no reproduce the error on my local Wordpress install. The Q&A posted fine each time. So then I cut the questions and answers out and posted the commentary here. That worked fine. Then I posted the rest of the post a paragraph at a time, through a series of edits. Through this process, I found that the paragraph where Eric mentions ‘Python’ caused the failure. Removing the word, on a hunch, allowed the edit to post successfully. As a workaround, wrapping the word in single quotes does not cause the problem.

How funky is that? The last time I had that problem on this blog was when trying to make a post about Kirk McDonald’s Pyd project. At the time, I didn’t try to narrow it down and just gave up. Now that I know what it is, I still can’t reproduce it on my local copy.
