There’s a new scripting option for D programmers. Nicolay Korslund has announced an early alpha release of Monster, his scripting language aimed at game developers. It’s written in D and based upon D’s syntax. From the NG post:
Monster includes some advanced features, such as states and (cooperative) multithreading. The concept is similar to UnrealScript, except that it is not bound to any specific engine (and that it is based on superior D syntax <g>.)
I’ve not looked into it yet, so no commentary from me about it yet. I do plan to give it a spin and see how I like it, but until it supports Tango (which it apparently does not) it’s not very useful for any of my projects.

Yeah, so there’s a lot going on in that title. This is the fourth release candidate of Tango, codenamed ‘Keep’ in honor of Daniel Keep’s contributions (specifically compression filters for bzip2 and zlib, which are a big, big thing from my perspective). You can read the full announcement, as posted on the NG, and more details on the Tango Wiki. Larsivi also has some comments about this release and more related to Tango on his blog.

Clay Smith has been busy porting his 2D game library, ArcLib, to Tango. He recently announced in the NG that Arc .02 has been completely ported. From here on out, all new versions of Arc will make use of Tango. He even put up a Wiki page detailing his rationale. You can get the ported .02 branch from svn.

Björn Lietz-Spendig, better known in D-land as BLS, is working on an IDE that will work with Java, D and MiniD. There’s an interview with him over at Geertjan’s Weblog, primarily regarding his IDE project. Though, we do learn that he lives in the south of France, which always sounds great to those of us who aren’t living there.
Björn is building the IDE on the NetBeans platform. I’ve never been a fan of NetBeans myself. I’ve primarily used Eclipse for my Java projects for a few years now, though I have gotten some mileage out of the NetBeans profiler. I’ll be keeping my eye on this project, though, since I’ve not settled on any of the IDE projects for D yet. I’m still happily using Crimson Editor, but I’m waiting for the day when one of the upcoming IDEs blows me away.

Two new releases of DMD to sink your claws into: the stable 1.021 and experimental 2.004. Several bug fixes and a few enhancements, some shared by both versions. The new -defaultlib and -debuglib command line switches, supported by both versions, should prove handy for more than a few people.
