std2 Update and DWin 0.30

It's been a slow week as far as newsgroup announcements go. And I haven't been wandering the web looking for D news items as I often do, so there hasn't been much to report. There have been a couple of announcements over the past week, though. Even if the pace of news announcements does pick up, I think I can safely predict that updates here will be sporadic until some time after the new year.

Bill Baxter has updated his std2 project to the DMD 2.008 version of Phobos. This is not a D 2.x project, but is targeted at the DMD 1.x series. If you are a Phobos user and are interested in taking advantage of the 2.x Phobos additions and improvements, but aren't yet ready to dive into the 2.x branch while it's still experimental, then std2 is for you.

On the Tango front, the DWin project has a 0.30 release. DWin is a collection of Tango-based utilities. In addition to the English project forum at DSource, there's a Chinese forum hosted elsewhere. I don't know of any other D projects with a Chinese support forum.

Andrei’s D Book

'Tis the season for D book announcements. Andrei Alexandrescu has posted on his site that he is putting together a D book:

Andrei is working on "The D Programming Language" book, slated to hit the shelves in October 2008. His interest in the D programming language stems from Andrei's active participation in the design of D 2.0 as a close collaborator of D's creator, Walter Bright.

I assume this book will focus on D 2.0 features. Hopefully, the new const system (which I really would prefer to do without, personally) and other new features will all be ironed out by then.

TankWars

Yet another D game: TankWars. This one is open source and has a project page over at DSource. Developed by Clay Smith, it is currently unfinished. It uses Tango and Clay's ArcLib (which in turn uses Derelict :) ). Clay started the project for school and says on his blog that he likely won't be finishing it. So if anyone wants to take up the challenge of completing it, it's waiting there for you!

guisterax

More D game goodness! Guillaume Chéreau has set up a project on DSource for his open source game, guisterax, a 2D Asteroids clone. The game is built on Phobos and uses Derelict.

Mayhem Intergalactic

This one slipped under my radar for quite a while. Indie game developer Inventive Dingo released a game back in July, Mayhem Intergalactic, which was created with D. If you frequent the DSource forums, you may know the developer by the handle 'Crispy'. The game is built on Phobos and uses Derelict to bind with some open source game libraries such as SDL.

Being a wannabe indie developer and big fan of D myself, I encourage you to get on over to Inventive Dingo and pick up a copy of Mayhem Intergalactic. I've got a loaded credit card at the moment, but as soon as I pay it off next week Crispy's got a guaranteed purchase from me.
