One of the biggest downers for me about DMD is that it isn’t available on Mac. If I ever finish that game I’ve been working on since the Stone Age and start actually selling more of them, the Mac will be an important platform. My preference with non-VM languages like C and D is to stick with one compiler across the platforms I target (meaning, usually, Windows and Mac, though I’m not a Mac coder by any means — I hand that off to someone else). This allows me to take advantage of compiler-specific extensions and not worry about the hassle of testing on compilers I’ll never want to use. As a one-man rodeo, I can get away with that. I’m set in my ways and don’t suspect I’ll change anytime soon.
In D-land, my compiler of choice is DMD. If, like me, you’ve been crossing your fingers for the day that DMD makes it to the Mac, you can stop crossing them in the near future. Walter has put up a blog entry detailing his experience so far in getting DMD to compile Hello World on the MacMini he bought himself for Christmas. And he says there’s more to come.
horray!
+1 platform
