Busy Days

Wednesday, August 8th, 2007

Sorry for the lack of updates recently. As much as I intended not to be in this position again, I’ve found myself with several things going on at once. As a result, Smoothie is suffering, Derelict is suffering and Tango.graphics is suffering. One of the things I’m working on is D related and will be a tremendous pleasure to announce when I am able to (couldn’t resist giving a teaser). So that sort of makes up for all the misery being inflicted upon my other projects.

The rest is more about putting food on the table. My wife’s company is in a bit of a jam with government regulators at the moment, so it’s not quite certain when she’ll be picking up a paycheck from them again. To fill the gap, I’ve taken on a bit of contract work that will take me away from most things D for a bit.

One of several non-programming gigs I’ve landed is proofreading a movie script being written in English by a Korean writer/director. He intends to shop it around Hollywood once it’s complete. Whether or not it goes anywhere, it’s still neat being able to get that close to a potential Hollywood project. I can’t give any details about it, but so far it’s looking like quite a fun script. I think it’s something I’d enjoy even if I saw it in a theater. But what do I know?

Much of the rest is rather mundane and boring, mostly proofreading or rewriting a variety of English documents written by Koreans. I’ll try to get back into my regular routine as soon as possible. Also, since I didn’t get around to putting together a Q & A for July, I intend to post two this month. I’ve got my eye on two candidates already, but have yet to ask them about it.

See you again when I can!

Blog Upgrade

Tuesday, May 22nd, 2007

I’ve just finished upgrading to the latest version of Wordpress. I had to do a full wipe this time, rather than simply overwriting existing files, so the potential for errors exists. If you see any, just let me know.

Also, I have a Q&A ready to post, but I’m running into an obscure Wordpress bug that I sometimes encounter. This is what prompted me to upgrade. Some posts cause a 404 error when trying to publish them. It happens only very rarely and I’m usually able to cut things out until the problem goes away. This time, though, is one of those where nothing is helping. The upgrade didn’t do anything for it.

I’m going to keep working at it until I can get the damn thing to go through. Maybe this time I’ll be able to figure out what’s triggering it so that I can submit a bug report to the Wordpress guys.

UPDATE: Interestingly enough, it seems to be the word ‘Python’ that causes things to barf when making a new post. I could no reproduce the error on my local Wordpress install. The Q&A posted fine each time. So then I cut the questions and answers out and posted the commentary here. That worked fine. Then I posted the rest of the post a paragraph at a time, through a series of edits. Through this process, I found that the paragraph where Eric mentions ‘Python’ caused the failure. Removing the word, on a hunch, allowed the edit to post successfully. As a workaround, wrapping the word in single quotes does not cause the problem.

How funky is that? The last time I had that problem on this blog was when trying to make a post about Kirk McDonald’s Pyd project. At the time, I didn’t try to narrow it down and just gave up. Now that I know what it is, I still can’t reproduce it on my local copy.

The New Look

Thursday, January 25th, 2007

I’ve been using this theme on my personal blog for a little while now and really like it. So I decided to go ahead and use it on all three of my blogs. If any issues crop up because of it, please comment on this post to let me know. Thanks!

The One With D Turns 1

Tuesday, January 16th, 2007

The first post to this blog, Introducing D, was made one year ago. I had a vague idea that I would use the blog to post my opinions of D, perhaps share some source examples, and to rehash news from the newsgroups, DSource forums, and anywhere else D popped up. This was one way I saw that I could contribute to the ever-growing D community that I had come to enjoy being a part of. As it turned out, the news posts became the primary focus — they’re a lot quicker to write!

Site and feed statistics show a steady growth in traffic. There are a lot more people visiting the blog than there were a year ago, that’s for sure. While I don’t foresee the format changing drastically, I do hope to expand this blog a bit over the next year. Now that DMD 1.0 is here, I expect we’ll see several new projects launching. I hope to include here regular interviews with people using D in projects, commercial or otherwise, so that others may use their feedback to help in evaluating the language for their own projects. I already have a couple of interviews in mind to get that kick-started, so look for that in the next couple of months.

If you made an announcement that didn’t get commented on here, it wasn’t intentional. Sometimes I miss things. And Wordpress has the weird bug that keeps cropping up every time I try to post something about Kirk McDonald’s project (I’m afraid that if I type the name here this post won’t go through). If you do notice that I’ve missed something, be sure to let me know. I know some readers use this blog to keep up on current D events because they don’t have time to pore through the NG or the different forums regularly. Plus, I get a lot of search engine hits for different D-related searches. Posting an announcement here can get a few extra eyes on it that otherwise wouldn’t have seen it.

I’m looking forward to the next year of blogging D. I’m sure there will be many great things to write about. And thanks to you for reading and giving me a reason to keep posting. (insert catchy D battle cry here)
